Elevate began with ash.
Before a single drop of paint touched this canvas, I cleared it with palo santo and then used the ashy end of the stick to write the word Elevate directly onto the surface. That word, drawn in sacred smoke and ash, became the first layer of intention before any paint was laid down.
From there the word was painted over in layers of color, followed by a moment of pure play - hands replacing brushes, paint swept and mixed directly with fingers across the surface. Layer by layer, brush by brush, the painting built itself into something I hadn't planned and couldn't have predicted. The final palette arrived entirely on its own terms.
What emerged is a lush, energetic canvas that vibrates with life - sweeping brushstrokes of teal, forest green and burgundy moving through fields of soft purple and lilac, with warm cream and chartreuse yellow woven throughout. Drips of pale lavender run freely down the surface, and touches of gold appear in the detail - quiet moments of light caught in the texture.
This piece feels like a garden that has never been tamed. And it wasn't.
As with all canvas pieces, the underlayer intention is woven into the foundation of the painting, present in the work even when it can't be fully seen.
