During my ceremonial cacao practitioner training, my coach said something in one of our sessions that I have carried with me since. No matter where she was, she told me, she always felt home, because home to her was something she carried inside her own body. I remember thinking it was one of the most beautiful things a person could feel, and knowing in the same moment that it was not entirely true for me. I am not someone who feels at home just anywhere. I feel my surroundings in my body everywhere I go, whether it is my own house, a restaurant, a place I exercise, a city I am visiting, and I have never been able to settle into a space that does not feel right to me.
In the years since, I have done real work to feel more grounded and at peace within myself. But that has not changed the other truth, that the physical space I place myself in still matters to me. I truly believe that beauty in our surroundings is medicine to our soul, and where I spend my days and rest my head is never something I can separate from how I feel inside.
"Always Home" carries both of these truths at once, the home you learn to hold inside yourself and the space that helps you feel it too. Chocolate brown and blackberry settle into horizontal bands low in the piece, grounded and unshakeable, while purple and lavender rise through the middle in softer, hazier stretches. Navy and slate blue thread through in darker bands, and cream opens up the space between them like light breaking through. Gold runs across the upper reaches, and threads of pale color drip down through every layer, the way light moves down through something already whole.
This piece was made with presence, breath, and complete surrender to what the paint wanted to do.
