Inside the Pyramids (Set of Two)
In 2025 I went to Egypt on a spiritual trip where I didn't know a single person before I arrived. One of the first things we did as a group was visit the Bent Pyramid, which meant crouching through a corridor two hundred and sixty feet long, barely four feet tall by four feet wide, sloping down the whole way in. On the bus there, a woman I'd just met told me she was claustrophobic and scared to go in. I told her I'd hold her hand the whole way and we'd breathe through it together.
The tunnel was worse than I expected, for both of us. I don't have claustrophobia, or I didn't think I did, but I remember praying for it to end, certain it wouldn't. When we finally reached the bottom, there was a steep ladder up to the next landing. At the top of it, I suddenly felt lightheaded. I found someone on the trip who practiced Qi Gong and told him I wasn't feeling well. As he moved his hands around me, everything went dark.
I came back into my body on the ground, and it felt like hours had passed, though it was probably less than a minute. I don't know where I went, or what I saw while I was gone. But it felt like something happened to me inside that pyramid, and it felt like a mystical way to begin a very meaningful journey.
This pair of works on paper holds the color of the descent into the Pyramid. Dusty rose and blush move through both pieces like the low light inside old stone, with warm gold breaking through in patches, the way a beam might catch dust in the dark. Soft gray and brown pool at the edges, heavier and closer to black in places, like the parts of the tunnel that never see light at all.
These pieces were made with presence, breath, and complete surrender to what the paint wanted to do.
**Please note that the colors in these pieces shift and change depending on the light of the room they live in, as well as the reflective quality of the metallic and pearlescent pigments. Photography captures one moment in one light - in your home, these pieces will reveal themselves differently throughout the day.
